Description

6 August 2025 --- Ralph, Cody

We have a few Black Whipcord Shirts in stock now and we are starting a run of Drab Green Whipcord Shirts that we expect to ship by November.   Website accepting payment for both colors.

These Shirts in Black have been really well-received, so we're happy to add a new color.  BUT ALSO!!  The Drab Green Whipcord Shirts are the first pieces we're offering from Batch Innes-1 ... 100% of the fiber used in this Batch is from the Innes Ranch in Gillette, Wyoming.

Whipcord is a type of durable, tightly woven fabric that has a distinctive diagonal (twill) rib pattern. It's known for its strength, wind resistance, and crisp finish, making it equally suitable for business attire as well as the backwoods.  Our own Whipcord is woven from 100% Worsted Yarn and is also, of course, 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool.

A strong endorsement by an Adirondack Woodsman and former Park Ranger got the wheels spinning on development of this Fabric.  Whipcord was once a standard for uniforms, including those of the British Army, U.S. Army and Marine Corps, German Military, as well as many of the Forest Ranger uniforms in the earlier part of the century. Many old timers will tell you it was the best stuff, but the #1 reason it fell out of favor was the cost of production. Synthetics or blended fabrics are far cheaper to manufacture at scale.

This Shirt is a natural extension of our mission:  to make serious performance gear that looks as good in the field as it does around town.

For a Shirt that is comfortable at room temperature, it offers surprising wind resistance and warmth.   And for a dressy Shirt, it stands up to rough and careless treatment really well.   Grey-collar workers (such as supervisors of outdoor projects, insurance adjusters ...) who need to bridge the gap between typical business suit and warm clothing that doesn't wrinkle or need to be laundered much (let alone pressed!) will find a friend in wool, particularly Whipcord.

I (Ralph) have been testing this for several months, and found it comfortable on bare skin.  Cody found it very slightly scratchy.   I also tested it in the woods, hunting.  For me, it's adequate warmth in 40F/5C, even with no base layer, so long as I was moving a little.  I crashed through some sticker bushes, and it held up pretty well, but that's not really what this Shirt is for and that sort of use is not recommended.   And the Fabric does have a slight sheen, so, at least in Black (the only color Shirt we've made so far), it's not recommended for someone trying to disappear in Nature.   For serious woods-wear, such as necessary for Pants, we'll need a different version of Whipcord.

With the help of JR at Factory8, who made the Shirt for us, we were able to locate some appropriately-sized, Slot Buttons!   If we make many of these Shirts, we might actually have to make the Slots ourselves, but LouLou Buttons had some old stock sufficient for us to get started.

Key Features:

  • 100% Pure Worsted Wool Whipcord – tightly woven for superior wind resistance and durability
  • Naturally Breathable & Insulating – keeps you warm when it's cold and cool when it's not.
  • Wrinkle Free – Due to the natural wrinkle-free nature of wool, this shirt always looks great. No additional chemicals are applied to this shirt, like many of the "Wrinkle Free" Shirts on the market.
  • Versatile Fit & Cut – tailored for movement.
  • Classic Workwear Styling – equally at home in the wilderness or city
  • Made in the USA – with our signature commitment to craftsmanship and 100% wool natural materials

Model is 5'11" 186lbs wearing a size SMALL.   Depending on how you like the fit, you may wind up ordering a smaller size than you would expect.  Cody wears Medium in most of our pieces.

Last photo shows the Whipcord Shirt paired with our (always 100% Wool Fabric) Denim Chore Coat and Denim Trousers in what we enjoy calling the WeatherWool Tuxedo.

Here is a first, rough look at the current Whipcord Color Palette.   I'll get something professional from Cody soon!    This quick-pic from my cellphone makes both color look lighter than they are.  But the Whipcord weave shows up well.   We're making some Natural White and will probably add other colors eventually.

Whipcord Color Palette … first rough look … WeatherWool Whipcord is 100% Worsted Wool and 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool. And as always, 100% USA.

Our Fabric

Our 100% American, 100% Wool Fabrics, made from 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool, are the foundation of our company. Making our own Fabric is time-consuming, difficult and expensive. But for us, there is no other way.

FAQ

Where is it made?

All of our products are 100% made in the USA using 100% American-made wool and materials. We pay American citizens to make all of our garments. See more.

Is WeatherWool in retail stores?

No, it is only available directly through this Website.

What are your garments designed for?

We set out to make the best All-Purpose outerwear possible and we take that "ALL" part seriously. While some items may be better then others for specific needs we like to think we have the perfect garment for anything you do outside regardless if it is in the serving in military, hunting, camping, city, country, work or worship.

Why is it so expensive?

We never cut a single corner at any step. We make our own fabric, from the best wool in the USA. There are over 45 steps in making our fabric alone. We use the highest quality materials made in the USA. We have owner operated customer service on call to serve you and offer free shipping in USA and Canada as well as hassle free returns.

Is WeatherWool Merino Wool?

Not exactly. Merino is great wool and has been very well marketed over the years but pure merino alone is not actually suitable for us.

We select our wool based on a number of characteristics including micron, strength, length, and comfort factor. With the help of our advisor Bob Padula we have determined the perfect recipe for our goals. Thanks to modern equipment we can test all the wool before we buy it and that wool is primarily coming from Rambouillet and Targhee breeds.

How do you clean WeatherWool

Short answer, you almost never need to. It's self cleaning. We've had garments we've worn for 7 years that have never been cleaned other then some rain.

However, things happen. If a lukewarm bath and dry flat doesn't do the trick, you can try wool-cleaner. Our full cleaning page is here.

Can bugs bite through your fabric?

We have not heard of any that can.

What is your customer service policy?

Our customers will be taken care of.

Full Customer Service policy can be found here.

About us

Founders / Owners

WeatherWool was founded in 2009 by Ralph and Debby DiMeo. Together with their children and a few friends they maintain 100% ownership of the company. Their full story can be read here.

Direct Connection To The Source

We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards. This isn't no stock photo. We're actually out there during shearing sampling wool and sharing stoies and good times with the ranchers and their families.

The Best We Can Figure Out

While most companies decide a price point, and reverse engineer a garment to meet that retail price, WeatherWool does the opposite. We make the best garment we can figure out how to make at every decision we face.Although our garments seem pricey to some our profit margins are below average and you're getting more value for your money and assurance that you're getting some of the best wool in the world.

Initial Review and Feedback

The Whipcord material is different than the other WeatherWool products. The fit is slightly larger than a “typical” dress shirt, but honestly it’s just the right size. It’s oversized, but not grossly oversized. I’m 6” 230lbs and I ordered the XL because that’s what I wear. If I bought a L, I would likely have returned it for a XL. That being said, if I were 215-220lbs, a L would probably be good.

Additional thoughts: This shirt is thin enough to be tucked without a noticeable bunch. Wearing this in the 70° house, it does feel cooling even after 2 hours… I don’t get it. Lastly, I didn’t notice any itching; just comfort.
Another home run for WeatherWool!

FIRST! - Uncanny Cooling Effect -

Just received my Whipcord Shirt and I am loving it already. It's hard to adequately describe, but the shirt has this uncanny cooling feeling while I'm wearing this indoors. It's almost as if you can feel the fabric breathe while you wear it. Maybe the 90+ heat and 70+% humidity is getting to me, but that's how it feels so far. I'm sure more will mention this when they receive their shirt and start wearing it.

I can already tell I'm going to be wearing this shirt a LOT. It's already my favorite new Work Shirt. WeatherWool knocks it outta the park again, looking forward to how this shirt is received and develops in the future. Love it!
