South Shore Chore Coat

First WW purchase. I really cannot believe how soft this jacket is. For size reference, I'm 6'0 215 pounds. My best fitting CPO shirts and jackets range from 24-25 inch across the chests. Bought an XL so that I could layer easily. It fits over a THICK hoodie with plenty of room to move around. Because of how soft the wool is it still lays really well over just a t-shirt without looking too boxy. The lowest temp I've worn it in is about 35F and it keeps me more than warm enough. Great product.

This jacket in charcoal (XL) has been on multiple cool weather trips with me and has gotten a use in the following conditions:
• Sunny, 55-70F day, very thick cotton shirt underneath, worn in urban environment. Light activity in the sun and walking, this bordered on too warm but keeping it unbuttoned and sleeves cuffed made it so I only took it off once for about 15 minutes during peak activity in the sun at peak heat. Sitting in the sun or shade this stayed very comfortable.
• Evening, 50-60F, light cotton t-shirt, urban environment. Light walking and standing at a windy rooftop bar were equally comfortable. While standing in the wind I had everything buttoned and collar popped to keep the wind off my neck. I would have been fine staying out there a while longer, but the rest of the group needed to head inside. Walking around, I had most buttons open and collar down.
• Full day hiking, 55-75F, light cotton shirt underneath. The early morning easy - moderate hikes this piece handled like a champ. I had to take the jacket off for the day once it breached ~68F due to the activity but was back on in the evening once it cooled down and the activities stopped.
• Brief heavy rain. My upper body was totally dry after running to a gas station during heavy rain. When I got to my hotel for the evening I ran the sleeve under running water for ~30s and did not notice any moisture get through to the inside. What water did stick to the outside seemed to just almost wipe off. Impressive.
• Tailgating and football game, 40-55F overcast, mid-weight cotton shirt. The low activity periods during lower temp times I got a little chilled, but moving around any or standing by the grill took care of that. The breathability really shone on the long walk to the game as I would normally break a sweat moving around, but not here. I also had some chemical hand warmers active in the hand warmer pockets which were really great considering I neglected gloves. Also, this jacket did not seem to pick up the grill smell that I noticed my clothes normally do. Sitting at the game with hand warmers I was extremely comfortable.
• Hunting all day in natural ground blind 40-50F, overcast and breezy, no activity aside from standing. Light merino t-shirt base layer, light alpaca mid layer, this jacket over and I was perfectly fine. I was momentarily chilled but I will attribute this to being improperly layered on my lower body with only cotton pants. My upper body was fine and the hand warmer pockets and some occasional heat from the barrel of the gun were sufficient to keep my hands warm all day. Other days on the trip when it was warmer I was great in just the merino base and this jacket, with cotton pants. The birds did not seem to be bothered by the color either, as they flew just fine.
• Sitting by smokey fire, 45-50F, evening. Merino t shirt base and this jacket. Comfortable distance to the fire and felt great sitting. It being denim made me feel comfortable carrying a bunch of wood (some partially burnt and sooty) against it. Any dust or debris left over simply brushed off by hand. The 100% merino t shirt I wore under this jacket smelled worse of smoke than this jacket, even checking back the next morning. As of the following morning, the jacket only smelled slightly of smoke if you stuck your nose against it. As of a few days following it does not smell of smoke at all.

Some misc notes:
• Excellent travel gear with the big pockets too, as the upper front pocket is perfect size for a US passport and the side pockets accommodate the largest iPhone laying on its side in a thin case (reminder I am wearing the XL, no idea if the pockets change size for different sizes of jacket).
• I have worn this through airports and kept it on the entirety of the many long flights (merino t shirt base layer). No exceptions. Excellent at keeping you comfortable in a wide range of indoor temperatures. I have needed to cuff and/or open up the plane vents a couple times though.
• I also felt comfortable walking around in busy urban areas with my wallet and phone in the large pockets with them buttoned. I cannot fit my hands into the big pockets while they are buttoned. The two openings on either side of the button are also perfect for slipping things in, so I can very quickly tuck my phone away to a secure pocket without issues.
I would love a pair of hunting mittens (fingerless gloves with the flip-over mitten deal) in this material. I imagine it could stand up to that kind of abuse.

small gripes and suggestions:
• It would be nice to have a second set of buttons on the sleeves to close the sleeves a bit more. You can wear this over a t-shirt but it does mean my arms have gotten a touch cold compared to the rest of my body because of the gaps at the cuff.
• Some kind of waist cinch like you see on some denim jackets would have been very nice during some of the colder days, just to keep the breeze from coming up the garment when I was...

I just received my Chore Coat yesterday in a large after initially ordering a medium and finding it to be too small, and it does exactly what I wanted from it. A single garment that covers a wide variety of uses in a wardrobe. The fitment is perfect, it looks fantastic both buttoned and sleeves down, as well as open with rolled sleeves. I head to work at the very coldest part of the day, just before sunrise, and I don't have to fuss with layering. Just throw on the Shore Chore and head on out.

I received my charcoal chore coat yesterday on Halloween. It’s everything I had hoped for, especially as to its design, appearance, quality of materials and craftsmanship and to how it drapes the body. I’m 6’-1”, 190 lbs and the large size fits me perfect. With a sleeved undershirt and t-shirt on underneath the coat, the coat’s sleeves reach about a third to a half of the distance between the wrist and the knuckles. The chest and shoulder area is loose but the coat is not baggy. Fit should be just fine with the addition of a wool sweater. Finally, the coat is simple but elegant. I understand the importance of pocket flaps on hard core garments meant for extreme use in extreme weather, but this coat’s appearance benefits from the simple use of a single button at the top of each lower pocket. No need to clutter the coat’s appearance with flaps. Ralph and his team really hit the bullseye with this product.

I was looking for a wool replacement light jacket to cover spring and fall. Something that would be at home outside around the yard, as well as, something warm to wear out to dinner at night. This coat is a timeless classic that is durable and unbelievably soft. Big pockets are super handy to dump stuff in like gloves or a cap while hand warmer pockets are a must. There is nothing bulky about this coat.Just minimalist design that is versatile and practical. This is a sharp coat!
