The sides and front opening of the Hood of the WeatherWool Anorak are adjusted by means of laces and cord locks. The laces are made of the same 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool Fiber as the rest of the garment. A separate adjustment from the read of the Hood control how far forward or back the Hood sits on the head.
The WeatherWool Al's Anorak has two large cell phone pockets.

Al's Anorak

Fabric-ColorMidWeight Lynx Pattern

Description

We have in-stock now some MidWeight Lynx Pattern Anoraks and some Natural White in both FullWeight and MidWeight, plus a smattering of Anoraks in other Fabrics.  FullWeight Brown will hopefully ship around February of 2025.  Any other Fabrics are pretty far off ... maybe September of 2025.

As we put any Anorak/Fabric into production, the website will accept paid pre-orders. No Anoraks in pre-order now.

Any Anorak not in stock or in production can be backordered (via NOTIFY ME button or phone or email) without cost or obligation, and we'll contact you when we are close to production.  Sorry this is confusing and sorry for fine print!!  THANK YOU!

Al's Anorak is a modern take on the classic design, with a focus on comfort and utility.

We love that our Anorak has been on TV a bunch. It's a favorite among the participants in History Channel's Hit series Mountain Men and Survival Contest ALONE. The WeatherWool Anorak has been worn on History by Mike Horstman, Brady Nicholls, Benji Hill, JP Quiñonez, Callie Russel and Amós Rodriguez. It's also worn by hundreds of people in the Military.

The Anorak is a design of the first inhabitants of North America's Arctic Region.  Our Finnish Advisor Anton Kalland tells us the term comes from the Finnish Anorakki, which in turn comes from the Ancient Greenland word Annoraaq.

Our Anorak handles a wide variety of conditions and activities and is designed for a relatively active individual to wear over one or sometimes two light base layers.

The Anorak is intended for temps between from 10F/-12C to 80F/27C. But people push it, successfully, into much colder conditions. Most people will be comfortable in temps from 20F/-7C to 70F/21C, indoors and out, with low to moderate levels of activity. The FullWeight Anorak is better at lower temps and the MidWeight better at higher temps.

Our custom-made 100% wool Fabric is soft enough to be worn directly on even the most sensitive skin, yet durable enough to see you through the most rugged adventures. Choosing the best fabric weight and garment size will depend on your climate, activity level, base layers, and personal preference.

Because the side zips of the Anorak accommodate so well the changing figure of an expectant Mom, we have a MATERNITY page.  Ladies, please send photos!    Versatility is a BIG thing for me, and I love that the 'rak runs the gamut from Maternity to Military!

Anorak Quality Control Checklist

Features

•Our custom Jacquard woven Fabric throughout the entire garment ... offered in both FullWeight and MidWeight

•Craftsmen-sewn, ultra-durable construction and materials

•Like our other garments, the structural seams of the Anorak are sewn with Mil-Spec Anefil water-resistant thread used by the US Army

•A modern take on the classic design, with a focus on comfort and utility

•Extra-long sleeves, reducing the need for gloves. Sleeve cuffs can also be "let-out" about 3 inches (7 cm) for unusually long arms

•Slot Buttons used exclusively because they are so secure

•Wrist cuffs can be adjusted to six sizes (flap can go around wrist either way)

•Four buttons at the neck closure, allowing for ventilation, comfort, and warmth. Our Neck Gaiter can be added for extra warmth around the neck

•Waist cinches to create a more tapered shape, reduce air space, prevent updraft

•Extra-large hood. Rear cinch enables the hood to be pulled back. Pull-cords in front, at each side, enable the hood to be fitted close around the head. We have lately switched the front cords from synthetic shock-cord to wool cord. The cords are now made from the same fiber as the garment. The new cords are shown in a close-up at left (black cord on Brown 'Rak). We can send wool cord to anyone who wants to upgrade an old Anorak. And we can even send shock cord to anyone who likes the synthetic better. You can switch by attaching the new cord to the old and carefully pulling though. We left the cords long and many people will cut them shorter. The hood will protect the head from a great deal of weather, even sideways weather. The large hood is also very good to provide some privacy and darkness for sleeping ... and a lot of people, particularly Military and travelers, do sleep in the Anorak (instead of hotel during long layover!)

•Generous front pouch, with elastic organizer strip, closure secured by slot buttons. A friend of mine who lives in Yellowstone National Park told me he never leaves the house without his bear spray tucked into the right-most position of the organizer. I visited him in 2022, and he was completely serious about the bear spray.

•Hidden zipper pocket inside the body of the jacket, behind the front pouch

•Inconspicuous yet spacious zippered pockets on each side of the chest. Left side chest pocket has an additional cell-phone sleeve. Phone will be inside the garment, where body-heat will help extend battery power

•Very long zippers on each side of the Anorak enable venting of heat and ease entry and exit. Side zips also facilitate access to anything on a belt. Opening the side zips also makes it comfortable to sit without hiking the 'rak.

•At the base of the side zips are a button and elastic tab. With the bottom of the 'rak buttoned this way, the zippers can be left open and there is no flapping.

•The side zips make the Anorak great for maternity wear! The Anorak is great maternity wear. The photo at left was taken "3 days before Baby"

•In size Large, a FullWeight Anorak weighs 3 lbs., 7 oz (1.6 kg)

•In size Large, a MidWeight Anorak weighs 2 lbs., 12 oz (1.25 kg)

Our Fabric

Our 100% American, 100% Wool Fabrics, made from 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool, are the foundation of our company. Making our own Fabric is time-consuming, difficult and expensive. But for us, there is no other way.

FullWeight Fabric

Our Full-Weight Fabric is the foundation of WeatherWool. It was the first Fabric we developed and remains our flagship product. Produced on a Jacquard loom, it is a three-dimensional weave that helps insulate far better than normal flat-weave wool fabrics. Our Full-Weight Fabric is our warmest Fabric. Our Full Weight Fabric is 20 ounces per square yard compared to our MidWeigth fabric, which is 14 ounces per square yard for comparison between the two.

MidWeight Fabric

Our MidWeight Fabric is the same as our flagship FullWeight Fabric but 30% lighter, making it ideal for those who engage in more activity—and endurance-based activities or simply need less warmth. Like our FullWeight, it's produced on a Jacquard loom, which gives the Fabric a three-dimensional weave that helps resists weather far better than standard flat-weave wool fabrics.

FAQ

Where is it made?

All of our products are 100% made in the USA using 100% American-made wool and materials. We pay American citizens to make all of our garments. See more.

Is WeatherWool in retail stores?

No, it is only available directly through this Website.

What are your garments designed for?

We set out to make the best All-Purpose outerwear possible and we take that "ALL" part seriously. While some items may be better then others for specific needs we like to think we have the perfect garment for anything you do outside regardless if it is in the serving in military, hunting, camping, city, country, work or worship.

Why is it so expensive?

We never cut a single corner at any step. We make our own fabric, from the best wool in the USA. There are over 45 steps in making our fabric alone. We use the highest quality materials made in the USA. We have owner operated customer service on call to serve you and offer free shipping in USA and Canada as well as hassle free returns.

Is WeatherWool Merino Wool?

Not exactly. Merino is great wool and has been very well marketed over the years but pure merino alone is not actually suitable for us.

We select our wool based on a number of characteristics including micron, strength, length, and comfort factor. With the help of our advisor Bob Padula we have determined the perfect recipe for our goals. Thanks to modern equipment we can test all the wool before we buy it and that wool is primarily coming from Rambouillet and Targhee breeds.

How do you clean WeatherWool

Short answer, you almost never need to. It's self cleaning. We've had garments we've worn for 7 years that have never been cleaned other then some rain.

However, things happen. If a lukewarm bath and dry flat doesn't do the trick, you can try wool-cleaner. Our full cleaning page is here.

Can bugs bite through your fabric?

We have not heard of any that can.

What is your customer service policy?

Our customers will be taken care of.

Full Customer Service policy can be found here.

About us

Founders / Owners

WeatherWool was founded in 2009 by Ralph and Debby DiMeo. Together with their children and a few friends they maintain 100% ownership of the company. Their full story can be read here.

Direct Connection To The Source

We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards. This isn't no stock photo. We're actually out there during shearing sampling wool and sharing stoies and good times with the ranchers and their families.

The Best We Can Figure Out

While most companies decide a price point, and reverse engineer a garment to meet that retail price, WeatherWool does the opposite. We make the best garment we can figure out how to make at every decision we face.Although our garments seem pricey to some our profit margins are below average and you're getting more value for your money and assurance that you're getting some of the best wool in the world.

Amazing piece of gear

I purchased the Lynx Midweight. This garment is extremely well made. The versatility is incredible. I like the fact you can cinch the waist to bring the fit in or loosen it up. I live in Texas and travel to NM and ND. In TX the zip up sides are money to stay comfortable. We went to Galveston in December, temps were about 40 with high winds coming off the gulf. Now she wants one too. I just purchased a WW blanket coat for her. Thank you Ralph for the accurate measurements. It makes sizing much easier by finding your favorite piece and measuring.

Midweight Anorak is an awesome piece of kit!!!

Purchased two of these in Lynx pattern, one for me, and one for the wife. Showed her mine and she announced her intention to steal mine until I surprised her with one for her (plan ahead, guys!). Super comfortable and well thought out design, the side vents are perfect for cooling off or quick access to your EDC pistol or other items. Hoodie style front pocket is great for warming hands. The mid-weight wool material feels great and breathes amazingly--puts all the fancy "high tech" artificial stuff to shame. As a veteran and avid outdoorsman, I have tried all the usual mil spec, ECWCS, and fancy commercial hunting/hiking stuff with artificial materials which don't breathe and either require constant layer changes or result in getting hot, sweaty, and then freezing cold when temperatures dip. It's like wearing an insulated air bubble, not too hot, not too cold, and dry all day. Equally perfect for lounging at home in front of the fire, or out hiking a cold and wet Pacific Northwest trail. This stuff is made to last, with great stitching and zippers. Coupled with the just simply outstanding and personal customer service you can't get from the "big name" stores, WeatherWool is is my new go-to.
