Description

26 July 2025 --- Ralph

We are shipping All-Around Jackets in True Black, Classic Brown, Lynx Pattern and Natural White, but some sizes/colors sold out.

It will be several months before we have any in Drab Green.

Double Hoods (separate, optional item at $325) were made from the same Fabric Batch 9 as the Jackets.

AAJs are USD $985 up to size 2X;  3X, $1035;  4X, $1085

The All-Around Jacket (AAJ) can be worn in almost any outdoor or social setting. Many people go straight from the field to professional meetings or church or restaurant.

The AAJ can withstand unlimited snow, huge amounts of sleet and rain, significant wind ... and even a dunking in winter.   It is designed for cool and cold weather, and can be worn in temps as high as 70F/22C (over a light wool base layer or even no base layer at all) or as cold as you like, far below freezing, with the right base layer(s). Lots of pockets.

Available in FullWeight Merino Jacquard Fabric in Solid Colors Black, Brown, Drab Green,  Lynx Pattern and Natural (Undyed) White.  All of the colors are shown in the accompanying photos, except that the older Brown on this page is actually somewhat lighter than current.  The Classic Brown in the color palette is current.

The All-Around Jacket appears regularly on History Channel's hit series MOUNTAIN MEN, lately worn by Bret Bohn, but also Josh Kirk and Kidd and Harry Youren. It's common practice for manufacturers to pay serious money for "product placement." Josh got in touch with us simply because he noticed other outdoor professionals in WeatherWool, and he wears the AAJ because he wants to.  Same with Bret, Kidd and Harry. The AAJ was also worn by Alex Javor (great review!) on the National Geographic TV Series Life Below Zero Next Generation. We have never paid anyone to wear WeatherWool.

If you purchase the AAJ, please also consider the Double Hood, which buttons onto the collar.  It's best to acquire both from the same Fabric Batch to ensure same dye lot.  There is NOTHING LIKE a Hood when you need one!  At present, it's all Batch 9 for both jackets and hoods.

There are some well-known people in the photos.  The gent with the tripod-camera is Advisor Ron Spomer.  And with the cigar, Carl Murawski of YouTube fame.  Carl posted that photo with the caption "This jacket makes me look way cooler than I am."

Recently, BLACK has become the most popular color for the AAJ.  I think that means people have come to think of it as more of a dressy, city-type garment than a work or woods garment.   I am kind of happy about that because it suggests that our audience is growing.  But I do hope that all our wool gets out in some real weather, too.

Quality Control All-Around Jacket

18 May 2025 --- Ralph & Alex

Features

•100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool

•Double Yoke (second layer of FullWeight Fabric across the top of the chest, shoulders, and top of the back)

•Snow and sleet don't matter. Double Yoke sheds huge amounts of rain and provides extra protection where most needed

•The second layer of wool hangs free from the rest of the AAJ, enhancing rain resistance

•One layer of our FullWeight Fabric will stop a wind of about 15mph (24kph). But you will also have base layers and the AAJ has more than one layer on top and in front

•Craftsmen-sewn, ultra-durable construction and materials

•Extra-long sleeves, reducing the need for gloves

•Large, side-entry hand-warmer pockets are separate from and underneath the cargo pockets

•Four zippered pockets inside the body of the jacket

•Adjustable wrist cuffs

•Waist cinches to create a more tapered shape if desired, or reduce airflow

•Two-way, heavy-duty YKK Vislon front zipper

•Storm Flap protecting the front zipper is secured by Slot Buttons.

•The Storm Flap also helps keep the zipper warm, which reduces the chances of the zipper failing due to cold. (YKK rates their zippers to -20F/-29C.)

•Front cargo pockets are closed with both zippers and flaps. The flaps are angled to shed rainwater and are secured with two slot buttons

•Elbows and forearms are doubled

•Serious collar can be flipped up and secured by a throat latch. When not in use, the latch is buttoned into the left cargo pocket or left buttoned to the collar. The latch can also be buttoned to the back of the collar and used as a loop to hang the AAJ from a peg. In the "rear position" the throat latch will also make the collar stand up a little more

•Mil-Spec Anefil Nylon water-resistant thread (used by the US Army)

•Slot Buttons used exclusively

•Three Slot Buttons on the back of the collar to attach the Double Hood (sold separately). If you do want the Double Hood, we recommend ordering at the same time as the AAJ to ensure same dye lot.

• The AAJ will provide a 50 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) range of comfort without any change of clothing. Dress for 35F/2C and you are good in 10F/-12C or 60F/16C

•In size Large, the AAJ weighs 5 pounds (2.27 kg)

Two-Way Zippers

A double zip can be opened at both bottom and top, or either one, or neither.   Any outdoor garment that uses a single zipper is just not a serious garment.   We generally use Vislon zippers because they are more tolerant of grit and cold than metal zippers. Also, Vislon is safer because it does not conduct electricity. We have been unable to find zippers whose performance is guaranteed in temperatures below -20F/-29C, so some of our garments, such as the All-Around Jac and the SkiJac, have storm flaps partly to insulate the zippers. The storm flaps also keep the zips from getting caked with ice and snow or clogged with grit.

Slot Buttons

Slot Buttons are more secure than any other type of button we know. They have two slots through which an ultra-strong strip of nylon ribbon is threaded. The nylon ribbon is very securely sewn to the garment using Mil-Spec Anefil Nylon water-resistant thread. The Slot Button design results in an extremely well-anchored Button.

Our Fabric

Our 100% American, 100% Wool Fabrics, made from 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool, are the foundation of our company. Making our own Fabric is time-consuming, difficult and expensive. But for us, there is no other way.

Full Weight WeatherWool

Our FullWeight Fabric was the start of WeatherWool ... the first Fabric we developed and still fundamental to us. Woven on a Jacquard loom, its three-dimensional structure insulates far better than normal flat-weave wool fabrics. FullWeight Fabric is our warmest Fabric. FullWeight Fabric weighs 18-19 ounces per square yard (627 grams per square meter), depending on the particular Fabric Batch. FullWeight is about 50% heavier than our MidWeight.

FAQ

Where is it made?

All of our products are 100% made in the USA using 100% American-made wool and materials. We pay American citizens to make all of our garments. See more.

Is WeatherWool in retail stores?

No, it is only available directly through this Website.

What are your garments designed for?

We set out to make the best All-Purpose outerwear possible and we take that "ALL" part seriously. While some items may be better then others for specific needs we like to think we have the perfect garment for anything you do outside regardless if it is in the serving in military, hunting, camping, city, country, work or worship.

Why is it so expensive?

We never cut a single corner at any step. We make our own fabric, from the best wool in the USA. There are over 45 steps in making our fabric alone. We use the highest quality materials made in the USA. We have owner operated customer service on call to serve you and offer free shipping in USA and Canada as well as hassle free returns.

Is WeatherWool Merino Wool?

Not exactly. Merino is great wool and has been very well marketed over the years but pure merino alone is not actually suitable for us.

We select our wool based on a number of characteristics including micron, strength, length, and comfort factor. With the help of our advisor Bob Padula we have determined the perfect recipe for our goals. Thanks to modern equipment we can test all the wool before we buy it and that wool is primarily coming from Rambouillet and Targhee breeds.

How do you clean WeatherWool

Short answer, you almost never need to. It's self cleaning. We've had garments we've worn for 7 years that have never been cleaned other then some rain.

However, things happen. If a lukewarm bath and dry flat doesn't do the trick, you can try wool-cleaner. Our full cleaning page is here.

Can bugs bite through your fabric?

We have not heard of any that can.

What is your customer service policy?

Our customers will be taken care of.

Full Customer Service policy can be found here.

About us

Founders / Owners

WeatherWool was founded in 2009 by Ralph and Debby DiMeo. Together with their children and a few friends they maintain 100% ownership of the company. Their full story can be read here.

Direct Connection To The Source

We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards. This isn't no stock photo. We're actually out there during shearing sampling wool and sharing stoies and good times with the ranchers and their families.

The Best We Can Figure Out

While most companies decide a price point, and reverse engineer a garment to meet that retail price, WeatherWool does the opposite. We make the best garment we can figure out how to make at every decision we face.Although our garments seem pricey to some our profit margins are below average and you're getting more value for your money and assurance that you're getting some of the best wool in the world.

Amazingly well put together! 5lbs of wool makes up an XL jacket. I have several items from WeatherWool and i keep coming back because the quality is unlike anything I’ve had.
I just bought it so I cannot testify to the wamth in the northern Maine winter. By judging by the heft and other products I own from WeatherWool, I don’t think it’ll be an issue even in the wet bone-chilling cold we get. But I did wear it in my 74° living room for an hour. I wasn’t too hot either.
Buy it without hesitation; you won’t regret it!

All Around Jacket’s a Hit

How could anyone possibly give this jacket anything other than a 5-star review? It certainly is an amazing jacket that will replace several in your closet!
Good: The weight screams quality and warmth. I just bought mine and even in 90° in the end of July I didn’t overheat while trying it on around the house. But once October comes, it’ll be my everyday jacket through April.
Lynx coloring is beautiful! I love it. I have an OD Green and a Lynx pattern anarak and I decided to go with the Lynx pattern because it’s that awesome!
I bought the double hood first… hoping to match the Lynx anorak. The dye lots are different so in an attempt to match (and gave me another reason to buy the AAJ) I bought it. No regrets!
Improve: I don’t write bad comments, just areas where improvement could be made. That being said, the inside pockets could be a lot larger. I’m thinking about my weather wool seamless hat, scarf… gloves? There isn’t a place inside to keep them. If there was, it’s be more bulky so I’m guessing that was part of the decision making process. I haven’t put them in the outside pockets yet but I will try the fit once needed.
Hanging the jacket can be challenging. Is there a strap or something anyone found where you can connect it to the buttons out back? I can see where a hook would be a problem. Currently, I’m using two wooden hangers in my home.
Conclusion: I live in central Maine. Our winter is typically wet and cold 6-7 months out of the year. I will certainly get my use out of this jacket as well as I have my other products. I can’t wait to see how this stacks up to our wet-heavy snow. I did put my double hood under the shower for 5 minutes and water hadn’t soaked through, so I’m anxiously awaiting winter. Crazy to think, but I’m curious. It is bulky and heavy. Something that I’ve been looking forward to wearing for a few years.

AAJ – Initial Impressions

I recently acquired the WeatherWool All-Around Jacket (AAJ) and wanted to share some initial thoughts, particularly regarding sizing and comfort.

Fit & Sizing: At 5’8” and approximately 170 lbs, I typically wear a medium T-shirt. I opted for a size small in the AAJ, and it fits comfortably, allowing room for layering underneath.

Comfort & Warmth: Despite the cold weather here, I’ve been wearing the jacket over just a T-shirt in temperatures around the 30s°F, and it’s kept me comfortably warm.

Design & Quality: The Lynx pattern is visually appealing. The jacket features high-quality zippers, durable buttons, and meticulous stitching.

Comparison: I also own a Single Mackinaw Cruiser, which I appreciate for its durability. However, the AAJ is heavier yet softer against the skin, making it versatile enough to wear over a T-shirt - the Mac is too scratchy for that.

Additional Notes: I purchased the jacket through WeatherWool’s Lending Library, a generous program offered by Ralph. I appreciate his responsiveness and the assistance he provided when I previously ordered an anorak earlier this year.

Overall, the AAJ has made a strong first impression, and I look forward to seeing how it performs over time.

Top notch quality, not an athletic fit

I just received my AAJ in black, the fit and finish is fantastic. Customer service seems to be top notch, even if I didn’t appreciate the lack of relative response on my sizing question I still quickly received a reply via text. Since then it’s been great though. I am a broader shoulder guy and don’t want to wear a bag of a jacket either. I followed the online guidance of measuring a well fitting jacket and it worked out well for me. The jacket I measured happened to be Filson and I ordered a medium as a result. I typically wear a L or even XL as a reference so I’d size down if you want it somewhat form fitting. It fits my upper torso well but is slightly baggy in the waist, but I recognize this is more of a performance and true outdoor coat rather than an easy/stylish fashion statement.

The reviews are all true....get one!

I just received my AAJ in Lynx today and absolutely love it. While this is not a true review of subjecting it to the elements, I'm confident that I know what I have in this short time. Top to bottom, this is without a doubt, the highest quality garment that I've ever put my hands on. No need to elaborate on that.

I wore it for a while in the house and out on the deck (upper 30's tonight) alternating a few times with my heavy insulated Scentlock jacket to help eliminate first impressions and get a good feel for it. For reference, I've never worn the Scentlock walking to or from my hunting spot and don't plan on that with the AAJ as I would overheat (typically worn in single digits up to mid 40's in MA until I opt for something lighter).

Tested outside in the upper 30's:
Neck area: much warmer than the Scentlock with the collar up and can button the collar with a layer on that also has a collar (I can't do that with other garments). Upper chest and shoulders area: about the same, maybe a touch warmer? Midsection: possibly a bit cooler due to more draft (had the drawcord cinched a bit but not all the way and would probably be eliminated sitting down or in my hunting saddle). Hand warmer pockets: Much warmer.

Inside the house: Felt much cooler which is a huge positive....I could easily see using this while sitting still in the woods in warmer temps. Stealth factor: Much quieter when moving my arms.

I tested it with just a T-shirt on, and it's unbelievably soft next to the skin. Maybe as soft as my merino under layers yet still feels very durable! The only minor "issue" I had is with mobility in the arms, but I honestly think that's to be expected with a heavy wool garment, double material on the elbows, and with me personally having long arms. This is NOT a knock on the product in any way, just honest feedback. I almost run out of movement in the elbows when I put my arms up to flip the collar up. That's when the arms are bent all the way back and elbows are straight out. Mobility gets better above my head such as putting on a hat or reaching for something above my head. And the mobility is still good for my intended uses - cold weather walks, ice fishing, putting a long gun to my shoulder or drawing my bow. If I were rock climbing in this, it wouldn't work....but I don't think anyone is buying if for that haha. It would still feel good paddling a kayak or canoe.

For the fit, I have a large. I'm 6'2", 205, 44" chest, and a 34" waist. It's true to size and is just about perfect. It's a little baggy around my waist. but not bad by any means. It's a good fit with just a T-shirt. And it has plenty of room for my 400 g merino base layer along with a heavier merino wool sweater. I would still have room for a vest but probably not another layer on the arms.

Overall I love it and can't wait to get it in the weather. The ice is finally thawed on the lake, and I can't wait to try it out on the kayak!
