WeatherWool All-Around Jacket in proprietary Lynx Pattern worn by professional outdoorsman, writer and photographer Ron Spomer

All-Around Jacket

Description

We plan to make All-Around Jackets in all our FullWeight Jacquard Fabrics toward the end of 2024.

The All-Around Jacket (AAJ) can be worn in almost any outdoor or social setting. Many people go straight from the field to professional meetings.  The AAJ can withstand unlimited snow, huge amounts of sleet and rain, significant wind ... and even a dunking in winter.   It is designed for cool and cold weather, and can be worn in temps as high as 70F/22C (over a light wool base layer or even no base layer at all) or as cold as you like, far below freezing, with the right base layer(s). Lots of pockets.

Available in FullWeight Merino Jacquard Fabric in Solid Colors Black, Brown, Drab Green,  Lynx Pattern and Natural (Undyed) White. All of the colors are shown in the accompanying photos.

The All-Around Jacket has appeared regularly on History Channel's hit series MOUNTAIN MEN, being worn by Josh Kirk and Kidd and Harry Youren, among others. It's common practice for manufacturers to pay serious money for "product placement." Josh got in touch with us simply because he noticed other outdoor professionals in WeatherWool, and he wears the AAJ because he wants to.  Same with Kidd and Harry. The AAJ was also worn by Alex Javor (great review!) on the National Geographic TV Series Life Below Zero Next Generation. We have never paid anyone to wear WeatherWool.

Please also consider the Double Hood, which buttons onto the collar of the AAJ.  It's best to acquire both at the same time in order to ensure both pieces come from the same dye lot.  There is NOTHING LIKE a Hood when you need one!

Quality Control All-Around Jacket

Updated 22 July 2024 --- Ralph

Features

•Constructed of 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool

•Double Yoke (second layer of FullWeight Fabric across the top of the chest, shoulders, and top of the back)

•Sheds huge amounts of rain and provides protection from cold and wind where we need it most.

•The second layer of wool hangs free from the rest of the AAJ, and it is this separation of layers that enables the jacket to handle so much rain without soaking through

•One layer of our FullWeight Fabric will stop a wind of about 15mph (24kph). But you will also have base layers and the AAJ has more than one layer on top and in front

•Craftsmen-sewn, ultra-durable construction and materials

•Extra-long sleeves, reducing the need for gloves

•Large, side-entry hand-warmer pockets are separate from and underneath the cargo pockets

•Four zippered pockets inside the body of the jacket

•Adjustable wrist cuffs

•Waist cinches to create a more tapered shape if desired, or reduce airflow

•Two-way, heavy-duty YKK Vislon front zipper

•Storm Flap protecting the front zipper is secured by Slot Buttons.

•The Storm Flap also helps keep the zipper warm, which reduced the chances of the zipper failing due to cold. (YKK rates their zippers to -20F/-29C.)

•Front cargo pockets are closed with both zippers and flaps. The flaps are angled to shed rainwater and are secured with two slot buttons

•Elbows and forearms protected with double thickness of our FullWeight Fabric

•Serious collar can be flipped up and secured by a throat latch. When not in use, the latch is buttoned into the left cargo pocket or left buttoned to the collar. The latch can be buttoned to the back of the collar, where it can be used as a loop to hang the AAJ from a peg. In the "rear position" the throat latch will also make the collar stand up a little more

•Mil-Spec Anefil Nylon water-resistant thread (used by the US Army)

•Slot Buttons used exclusively

•Three Slot Buttons on the back of the collar to attach the Double Hood (sold separately). If you do want the Double Hood, we recommend ordering at the same time as the AAJ to ensure same dye lot.

• The AAJ will provide a 50 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) range of comfort without any change of clothing. Dress for 35F/2C and you are good in 10F/-12C or 60F/16C

•In size Large, the AAJ weighs 5 pounds (2.27 kg)

Two-Way Zippers

A double zip can be opened at both bottom and top, or either one, or neither.   Any outdoor garment that uses a single zipper is just not a serious garment.   We generally use Vislon zippers because they are more tolerant of grit and cold than metal zippers. Also, Vislon is safer because it does not conduct electricity. We have been unable to find zippers whose performance is guaranteed in temperatures below -20F/-29C, so some of our garments, such as the All-Around Jac and the SkiJac, have storm flaps partly to insulate the zippers. The storm flaps also keep the zips from getting caked with ice and snow or clogged with grit.

Slot Buttons

Slot Buttons are more secure than any other type of button we know. They have two slots through which an ultra-strong strip of nylon ribbon is threaded. The nylon ribbon is very securely sewn to the garment using Mil-Spec Anefil Nylon water-resistant thread. The Slot Button design results in an extremely well-anchored Button.

Our Fabric

Our Fabric is the heart of what we do. We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards of long, strong, and comfortable fibers.

Full Weight WeatherWool

Our Full-Weight Fabric is the foundation of WeatherWool. It was the first Fabric we developed and remains our flagship product. Produced on a Jacquard loom, it is a three-dimensional weave that helps insulate far better than normal flat-weave wool fabrics. Our Full-Weight Fabric is our warmest Fabric. Our Full Weight Fabric is 20 ounces per square yard compared to our MidWeigth fabric, which is 14 ounces per square yard for comparison between the two.

FAQ

Where is it made?

All of our products are 100% made in the USA using 100% American-made wool and materials. We pay American citizens to make all of our garments. See more.

Is WeatherWool in retail stores?

No, it is only available directly through this Website.

What are your garments designed for?

We set out to make the best All-Purpose outerwear possible and we take that "ALL" part seriously. While some items may be better then others for specific needs we like to think we have the perfect garment for anything you do outside regardless if it is in the serving in military, hunting, camping, city, country, work or worship.

Why is it so expensive?

We never cut a single corner at any step. We make our own fabric, from the best wool in the USA. There are over 45 steps in making our fabric alone. We use the highest quality materials made in the USA. We have owner operated customer service on call to serve you and offer free shipping in USA and Canada as well as hassle free returns.

Is WeatherWool Merino Wool?

Not exactly. Merino is great wool and has been very well marketed over the years but pure merino alone is not actually suitable for us.

We select our wool based on a number of characteristics including micron, strength, length, and comfort factor. With the help of our advisor Bob Padula we have determined the perfect recipe for our goals. Thanks to modern equipment we can test all the wool before we buy it and that wool is primarily coming from Rambouillet and Targhee breads.

How do you clean WeatherWool

Short answer, you almost never need to. It's self cleaning. We've had garments we've worn for 7 years that have never been cleaned other then some rain.

However, things happen. If a lukewarm bath and dry flat doesn't do the trick, you can try wool-cleaner. Our full cleaning page is here.

Can bugs bite through your fabric?

We have not heard of any that can.

What is your customer service policy?

Our customers will be taken care of.

Full Customer Service policy can be found here.

About us

Founders / Owners

WeatherWool was founded in 2009 by Ralph and Debby DiMeo. Together with their children and a few friends they maintain 100% ownership of the company. Their full story can be read here.

Direct Connection To The Source

We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards. This isn't no stock photo. We're actually out there during shearing sampling wool and sharing stoies and good times with the ranchers and their families.

The Best We Can Figure Out

While most companies decide a price point, and reverse engineer a garment to meet that retail price, WeatherWool does the opposite. We make the best garment we can figure out how to make at every decision we face.Although our garments seem pricey to some our profit margins are below average and you're getting more value for your money and assurance that you're getting some of the best wool in the world.

Hefty & warm

6’4, 290lbs, 50 inch chest. Prefer roomy fit so I can layer thermals, wool shirt, & thick sweater when chilly. Purchased 3XL. It’s on the big side…perhaps 2XL would have been closer fitting…yet when layering for real cold, I’m glad I bought big. It’s hefty, but can easily conceal full size pistol & accessories with no print. Wish the inset merino ribbed cuffs from the hooded jacket were used instead. Cold rain didn’t sink in after wearing multiple days in a row in the rain. If only I could find a way to incorporate detachable mutton shearling shawl collar. Makes for a great car coat when weather hits 40s & below. Easily replaced my Filson Double mackinaw cruiser due to its functionality

Amazing

Recently came back from a hunting trip up in northern Ontario (Canada), temps were all over the place but most of the trip was cold (low single digits celsius/low 30's fahrenheit, wet (rained basically the entire trip) and windy! I got an XL which in hindsight probably could have gotten a XXL (im 6'2" 270lbs), the XL fits fine with just a thermal base layer and light sweater which thankfully is all you really need when wearing this jacket. I don't even know how to describe this jacket, other than amazing. It would be soaked at the end of the day yet it hardly felt wet, walking 10-15K a day and never overheated in it, the only thing i would add to this jacket is slashed chest height hand warmer pockets? Other than that its perfect. Would also like to mention how amazing the customer service is, Ralph contacted me continuously throughout my purchase and was a pleasure to deal with. I originally received a size L when I had ordered an XL, exchange was very straight forward and Ralph even covered the duty fee's the second time around for me (border fee's coming into Canada). I can't say enough good things about this jacket and the company itself. In a world dominated by cheaply made disposable clothing and overseas manufacturing, WeatherWool is one of those rare gems. Keep up the good work! You have yourselves a life long customer north of the border!

Superb product

I no longer spend time in the woods .I live the city and enjoy being outside. This jacket is amazing. I have been caught in rain, snow, wind. Nothing bothers this coat and it looks good. Their customer service department (Ralph) will do whatever is necessary to make a potential customer for life happy. Do yourself a favor and enjoy this product. I also have the hood and just ordered the vest.
