Description

25 September 2025 --- Cody

The Five-Pocket Vest is a new piece for us ... first production run completed 17 September!

As of right now, the Five-Pocket Vest is offered only in our 100% Wool Denim, in the Charcoal color.  We expect to offer this Vest in several other colors/Fabrics eventually.

(Very few are aware that Denim is a way of weaving ... Denim is not a fabric.   We seem to be the only American source for 100% Wool Denim.  No cotton, no synthetic, nothing but 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool in our Denim.  Please visit our Denim Page for more info.)

The Five-Pocket Vest is very much a crossover piece.   It will handle serious physical work, but it also looks natural with a dressy shirt and a tie.  It's cool enough for typical indoor temps but warm enough that some people will find it sufficient for temps below freezing.

The Five-Pocket has five pockets:

  • Chest pocket is an open-top (drop pocket) that will do a good job of holding a large cell phone
  • Handwarmer pockets on each side are generously sized
  • Inner zippered pockets on each side are large enough to secure a big cell phone

Mostly, we don't use liners in our garments.   But we made an exception here because we wanted the inner zippered pockets but didn't want stitching showing on the outside of the Vest ... and because the Heritage Fabric we used for the inner lining will add substantial wind resistance, but at the same time will feel cool to the touch in warm weather because the our Heritage Fabric is 100% worsted yarn while the Denim outer is 100% woolen yarn.

(All our yarns are 100% WOOL!  But woolen-spun yarns are chubby and fuzzy while worsted yarns and skinny and slick.  Confusing terminology, I know.  There is some explanation on our Spinning Page.)

Like all our Fabrics, both the Denim and the LightWeight are made with 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool.   This means the fiber used for the inside and outside of the Vest is the same.

The Five-Pocket Vest can be worn in combination with some of our other pieces ... usually as an under layer, but possibly over the top.  The size Large layers well under a Large Chore Coat

Model in photos is 5'11"(180.3 cm), 180lbs (81.7 kg), wearing size medium vest and medium chore coat in the charcoal and a large chore coat I the Walnut.

Slot Buttons

Slot Buttons are more secure than any other type of button we are aware of. They have two slots through which an ultra-strong strip of nylon ribbon is threaded. The nylon ribbon is very securely sewn to the garment using Mil-Spec Anefil Nylon water-resistant thread. The Slot Button design results in an extremely well-anchored Button.

Our Fabric

Our 100% American, 100% Wool Fabrics, made from 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool, are the foundation of our company. Making our own Fabric is time-consuming, difficult and expensive. But for us, there is no other way.

Denim WeatherWool

Denim is a high abrasion—and tear-resistant weave, making it a staple in workwear. Instead of using cotton, we produce our Denim from 100% WeatherWool-certified Wool. You'll find our Denim to be much softer and cozier than traditional cotton denim.

FAQ

Where is it made?

All of our products are 100% made in the USA using 100% American-made wool and materials. We pay American citizens to make all of our garments. See more.

Is WeatherWool in retail stores?

No, it is only available directly through this Website.

What are your garments designed for?

We set out to make the best All-Purpose outerwear possible and we take that "ALL" part seriously. While some items may be better then others for specific needs we like to think we have the perfect garment for anything you do outside regardless if it is in the serving in military, hunting, camping, city, country, work or worship.

Why is it so expensive?

We never cut a single corner at any step. We make our own fabric, from the best wool in the USA. There are over 45 steps in making our fabric alone. We use the highest quality materials made in the USA. We have owner operated customer service on call to serve you and offer free shipping in USA and Canada as well as hassle free returns.

Is WeatherWool Merino Wool?

Not exactly. Merino is great wool and has been very well marketed over the years but pure merino alone is not actually suitable for us.

We select our wool based on a number of characteristics including micron, strength, length, and comfort factor. With the help of our advisor Bob Padula we have determined the perfect recipe for our goals. Thanks to modern equipment we can test all the wool before we buy it and that wool is primarily coming from Rambouillet and Targhee breeds.

How do you clean WeatherWool

Short answer, you almost never need to. It's self cleaning. We've had garments we've worn for 7 years that have never been cleaned other then some rain.

However, things happen. If a lukewarm bath and dry flat doesn't do the trick, you can try wool-cleaner. Our full cleaning page is here.

Can bugs bite through your fabric?

We have not heard of any that can.

What is your customer service policy?

Our customers will be taken care of.

Full Customer Service policy can be found here.

About us

Founders / Owners

WeatherWool was founded in 2009 by Ralph and Debby DiMeo. Together with their children and a few friends they maintain 100% ownership of the company. Their full story can be read here.

Direct Connection To The Source

We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards. This isn't no stock photo. We're actually out there during shearing sampling wool and sharing stoies and good times with the ranchers and their families.

The Best We Can Figure Out

While most companies decide a price point, and reverse engineer a garment to meet that retail price, WeatherWool does the opposite. We make the best garment we can figure out how to make at every decision we face.Although our garments seem pricey to some our profit margins are below average and you're getting more value for your money and assurance that you're getting some of the best wool in the world.

Versatile with class, comfortable without bulk.

The 5 pocket denim vest in XLarge is a joy to wear. With no sleeves it combines warmth around the house with full freedom of movement. The pockets provide secure storage of wallet, phone, and keys. The lapels give it that bit of class that you'll never find in a zippered puffy down garment. SIZING--I'm an in-between size, i.e. "Large and a half." I'm 69, 5'8", 185, 37" pants, size 44 jacket. (I have the Basic Vest in both Large and XLarge; the Large works with a single light layer, and the XLarge is best when I have a long-sleeve tee and heavy flannel shirt.) For me, with the 5 pocket vest, XLarge is the ticket. For reasons irrelevant here I meet in fellowship with groups a couple times a week, and the 5 Pocket Vest is perfect for sitting still in sparsely heated church basements. Also, it pairs wonderfully with a Hooded Jacket without that binding feeling that can accompany heavy layers. The 5 Pocket Vest alone won't get me through an upstate New York winter, but it adds many options dealing with temperatures from 70F to well below zero with the right outer garment. I think it's worth every penny. Looking great is a bonus.

Five pocket vest

I’ve had 2 of the basic vests for years, 1 in full-weight lynx and 1 mid-weight drab. Just recently added the new 5 Pocket Vest. It moves to the top of my “go to” list for my vest! The inner liner in my opinion significantly increases the warmth as compared to my other 2 basic vests that aren’t lined. Good call on the liner! I guess that the denim weave in the 5 Pocket Vest is actually lighter weight than my Full-weight Lynx vest but “feels” warmer. Only suggestion I can give for an improvement to this vest is to add the tabs at back to adjust the girth. Those tabs are on the basic vest and I use them to adjust if needed based on how many layers I have on under the vest. In warmer weather I may have a t-shirt on under the basic vest and can tighten the back tabs to “slim” the fit of the vest.

This is my first piece of the Denim weave and I am extremely pleased that the “feel” is just as good as the Jacquard weave

Although ive onle Only had it a little over a week, i love it. I have since ordered a larger size for better layering as well as the trousers and hoodorak. The denim wool is amazing. I think the worsted+ wollen weave gives you a really nice middle ground for the insulation and wind benefits of each. Not sure how i feel about the liner and pockets yet but it definitely adds some good wind resistance. I run cold generally but Im pretty comforttable in a base layer and vest from about 50-80⁰f depending on direct sun and wind exposure.

So far my only wish would be for a second chest pocket
