Description

The classic CPO (Chief Petty Officer) Shirt originated almost 100 years ago, and has been widely appreciated ever since. It’s a jacket or a shirt, depending upon what you need and what else you wear. In our Fabric, the CPO Shirt is extremely versatile, enhancing the basic, timeless design.

The CPO is constructed with our own MidWeight Merino Jacquard Fabric. If you are looking for a warmer shirt with a full button-down. Please take a look at our ShirtJacs, (comes in Lynx pattern, Drab, Brown and Black) for a similar item in FullWeight.

The CPO is typically a 2nd layer but often a 3rd layer and is sometimes worn as a mid-layer or even a base-layer. Some people will tuck the CPO into their Pants.  Our Fabric is comfortable enough that the CPO can be worn over a short-sleeve base-layer or even as a base-layer (as in the video at bottom).

Predicting what garments will work for which people is always tricky because there are so many variables. For me, the MidWeight CPO is warm enough for active wear throughout the winter in New Jersey, in temperatures below freezing, with one or two light base layers. MidWeight Fabric has a lot of warmth, but it's not designed for sitting in freezing temps.

WeatherWool Advisor Leo Grizzaffi, the outdoor writer, likes to wear his CPO Shirt instead of a sport jacket.

Here is a review published by Explore Magazine and written by Kevin Callan, the magazine's field editor and a well-known tester of outdoor products. The review was written when we referred to the CPO as a ShirtJac (sorry for confusion!).

And a neat comment sent to us by customer Bruce Carlson:  "Received my XL Lynx [CPO Shirt] yesterday. Wore it to work today. 5-6 compliments … everyone wanted to 'touch' it!". People wanting to "touch it" is something we hear often about Lynx Pattern.

Quality Control Steps for the CPO

MidWeight CPO, walking in light rain, temp of 66F/19C, without a base layer ... a day when the MidWeight CPO was better than anything else I can think of ... with no base layer at all!

Please Note: We still have inventory of the previous model of CPO if you prefer the button collar. You can shop it here.

Slot Buttons

Slot Buttons are more secure than any other type of button we know. They have two slots through which an ultra-strong strip of nylon ribbon is threaded. The nylon ribbon is very securely sewn to the garment using Mil-Spec Anefil Nylon water-resistant thread. The Slot Button design results in an extremely well-anchored Button.

Our Fabric

Our Fabric is the heart of what we do. We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards of long, strong, and comfortable fibers.

MidWeight WeatherWool

Our MidWeight Fabric is the same as our flagship FullWeight Fabric but 30% lighter, making it ideal for those who engage in more activity—and endurance-based activities or simply need less warmth or weight in the pack. Like our FullWeight, it's produced on a Jacquard loom, which gives the Fabric a three-dimensional weave that helps insulate far better than regular flat-weave wool fabrics

FAQ

Where is it made?

All of our products are 100% made in the USA using 100% American-made wool and materials. We pay American citizens to make all of our garments. See more.

Is WeatherWool in retail stores?

No, it is only available directly through this Website.

What are your garments designed for?

We set out to make the best All-Purpose outerwear possible and we take that "ALL" part seriously. While some items may be better then others for specific needs we like to think we have the perfect garment for anything you do outside regardless if it is in the serving in military, hunting, camping, city, country, work or worship.

Why is it so expensive?

We never cut a single corner at any step. We make our own fabric, from the best wool in the USA. There are over 45 steps in making our fabric alone. We use the highest quality materials made in the USA. We have owner operated customer service on call to serve you and offer free shipping in USA and Canada as well as hassle free returns.

Is WeatherWool Merino Wool?

Not exactly. Merino is great wool and has been very well marketed over the years but pure merino alone is not actually suitable for us.

We select our wool based on a number of characteristics including micron, strength, length, and comfort factor. With the help of our advisor Bob Padula we have determined the perfect recipe for our goals. Thanks to modern equipment we can test all the wool before we buy it and that wool is primarily coming from Rambouillet and Targhee breads.

How do you clean WeatherWool

Short answer, you almost never need to. It's self cleaning. We've had garments we've worn for 7 years that have never been cleaned other then some rain.

However, things happen. If a lukewarm bath and dry flat doesn't do the trick, you can try wool-cleaner. Our full cleaning page is here.

Can bugs bite through your fabric?

We have not heard of any that can.

What is your customer service policy?

Our customers will be taken care of.

Full Customer Service policy can be found here.

About us

Founders / Owners

WeatherWool was founded in 2009 by Ralph and Debby DiMeo. Together with their children and a few friends they maintain 100% ownership of the company. Their full story can be read here.

Direct Connection To The Source

We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards. This isn't no stock photo. We're actually out there during shearing sampling wool and sharing stoies and good times with the ranchers and their families.

The Best We Can Figure Out

While most companies decide a price point, and reverse engineer a garment to meet that retail price, WeatherWool does the opposite. We make the best garment we can figure out how to make at every decision we face.Although our garments seem pricey to some our profit margins are below average and you're getting more value for your money and assurance that you're getting some of the best wool in the world.

My Favorite Shirt

The WeatherWool CPO shirt is my absolute favorite article of clothing I own. It’s comfortable in cold temperatures and comfortable in 60 degree temps as well. It’s soft as can be and I’ve placed another order for a different color CPO too. I’m 6’ tall and 175 pounds and a Medium fits perfectly with a lightweight teeshirt underneath.

Top notch wool!

I work in the outdoors year round and have always been a big fan of wool for it's warmth and hardiness. My Weather Wool jacket just took things up a couple more notches. I think this is the best quality wool garment I have work yet and it's also stylish compared to my army surplus wool.

Favorite........

Received my Cream CPO and it is my instant favorite WW piece. I love everything Ralph and Debbie do but this is a whole new level of perfect. If you are reading reviews to decide whether or not to order some WW for yourself, you are doing it wrong, just do it. At worst you can return it with the best customer service around, at best you realize that you have been missing out.

Casual with class

The midweight CPO shirt is versatile, warm, and amazingly comfortable. The size Large works best on my frame (5'8", 180 lbs, 36" waist) and allows room to layer. Over a crew neck sweater it works as a blazer, and it's soft enough to wear over just a T shirt. Around the house I'll forget I have it on. Pockets easily accommodate a large cell phone. I spilled some soda down the front and was amazed to see the droplets bead and roll off without a trace. I own many wool items from Filson, Pendleton, Willis and Geiger, Brooks Brothers and others. WeatherWool meets or exceeds all of them for quality, workmanship, attention to detail, comfort and style.

The most unique garment I’ve ever purchased

In my career I’ve used just about all the gear and have had fairly close relationships with some major brands.

Weatherwool caught me by surprise after it was suggested to me as a utilitarian, old world / new tech alternative to some well-known heritage woolen brands and the outdoor clothing market as a whole.

Initially, I balked at the price but after educating myself I find the existence of these garments quite remarkable as well as the inherent value in the actual finished garments.

The CPO is really the perfect mid or outerlayer for 80% of what I do for work.

This is a warm, comfortable and exceptionally well-made layer and in Lynx it’s gorgeous while being functional. How rare indeed.

I am 6’ 3” 180 with a long torso and broad shoulders. The brands that have fit me in the past are Frilufts outdoors brands from Scandinavia. I purchased a medium

I find the length of the CPO as spot on in all areas with maybe the arms a bit short when lifting my arms. This is fine, I am a hard fit.

This piece incorporates everything I look for in my gear - warm with a wide use range, timeless tech, exceptional aesthetics and what appears to be reliability. Combine those attributes with far beyond average customer service and I am extremely happy.

In the future, I’d love to see a work vest with tool slots and a western collar and a work jacket with similar features.

I spend 10+ months a year working outdoors around the world. I am satisfied to finally be using Weatherwool.
