Selvedge Poncho

Description

Factory8 did a great job on the first run of updated Ponchos, but they sold out quickly.  We'll make more, hopefully before 2024 ends.

One of the things we really like about a Poncho is that it offers so much versatility, and versatility is a very large part of what we are about.

Before 2024, we had not made Ponchos for several years.  This new version is a total beast compared to the previous ... much bigger, with additional features:

The first production run of updated Ponchos were all made with our own FullWeight Merino Jacquard Fabric, including the selvedge. But people asked for a lighter Poncho, so we'll be making Ponchos in all our FullWeight and MidWeight Fabrics ... and maybe even Denim moving forward.

These Ponchos are large and only come in one size. We use the entire width of the bolt of Fabric, including the selvedge ... 57 inches (145 cm) across.  Next run, they MAY be a little narrower because the bolts may vary in width.  The front of the Poncho is about 42 inches (107 cm) and the back a little longer at about 44 inches (112 cm)

A mounted soldier in Ukraine told me a Poncho can provide tremendous warmth to a rider by capturing heat rising from a horse.

In testing, I was nicely surprised to find I could even mostly keep weather coming from the front off my face by tucking my chin inside the Poncho, pulling down on the side cords, relaxing the rear strap and looking down.  Not the most natural way to walk, but better than wind or incoming sleet.

More Pictures and Info about the Poncho

Features

•VERY Generously-sized Hood. The Hood can be snugged by drawstrings located at either side of the neck and a draw-strap with buckle at the back of the head. Fully relaxed (expanded), the Hood will protect your face from wind and weather coming from above or from the sides. Depending how you adjust the Hood, you may want to wear a hat with a bill. But a hat is not needed if you use the rear draw strap to pull the Hood back. The draw strings at the sides let you snug the Hood close around the head.

•The Poncho has a chest placket that can be opened for ventilation of buttoned shut (Slot Buttons) all the way up to the neck

•On either side of the chest placket is a large pocket secured by a zipper. The left-side pocket has a cell-phone sleeve

•There are Slot Buttons along the entire length of each side of the Poncho.  These buttons are about 3 inches (7.5 cm) apart, 11 buttons on each side

•A large Front Pouch that can be entered from both sides, and closed with a button at each side. The bottom three inches or so (7 cm) on each side of the Front Pouch is sewn shut, creating a "gutter" for added security of contents. Within the front pouch, sewn to the main panel of the Poncho, is an elastic organizer strip to hold two items securely

•Hidden from sight on the inside of the Poncho, behind the Front Pouch, is a Handwarmer Pouch, almost as large as the Front Pouch

•Inside the Handwarmer Pouch is another zippered pocket, easily large enough to secure the biggest cell phone, a wallet and passport

•The Poncho can be used as a blanket

•At the bottom of the Poncho, the borders are doubled to improve the drape and balance ... but also ... the Borders are tubular. Lying flat, they are about three inches (7.5 cm). A supporting pole or stick up to about 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter can be run inside the borders. This should enable the Poncho to be used as a tarp or lean-to shelter, but we have not tested that yet. Please LMK if you do!
In FullWeight Fabrics, the Poncho weighs 6 pounds, 5 ounces (2.9 kg). MidWeight will weigh about 4.5 pounds (2 kg)

Our Fabric

Our Fabric is the heart of what we do. We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards of long, strong, and comfortable fibers.

FAQ

Where is it made?

All of our products are 100% made in the USA using 100% American-made wool and materials. We pay American citizens to make all of our garments. See more.

Is WeatherWool in retail stores?

No, it is only available directly through this Website.

What are your garments designed for?

We set out to make the best All-Purpose outerwear possible and we take that "ALL" part seriously. While some items may be better then others for specific needs we like to think we have the perfect garment for anything you do outside regardless if it is in the serving in military, hunting, camping, city, country, work or worship.

Why is it so expensive?

We never cut a single corner at any step. We make our own fabric, from the best wool in the USA. There are over 45 steps in making our fabric alone. We use the highest quality materials made in the USA. We have owner operated customer service on call to serve you and offer free shipping in USA and Canada as well as hassle free returns.

Is WeatherWool Merino Wool?

Not exactly. Merino is great wool and has been very well marketed over the years but pure merino alone is not actually suitable for us.

We select our wool based on a number of characteristics including micron, strength, length, and comfort factor. With the help of our advisor Bob Padula we have determined the perfect recipe for our goals. Thanks to modern equipment we can test all the wool before we buy it and that wool is primarily coming from Rambouillet and Targhee breads.

How do you clean WeatherWool

Short answer, you almost never need to. It's self cleaning. We've had garments we've worn for 7 years that have never been cleaned other then some rain.

However, things happen. If a lukewarm bath and dry flat doesn't do the trick, you can try wool-cleaner. Our full cleaning page is here.

Can bugs bite through your fabric?

We have not heard of any that can.

What is your customer service policy?

Our customers will be taken care of.

Full Customer Service policy can be found here.

About us

Founders / Owners

WeatherWool was founded in 2009 by Ralph and Debby DiMeo. Together with their children and a few friends they maintain 100% ownership of the company. Their full story can be read here.

Direct Connection To The Source

We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards. This isn't no stock photo. We're actually out there during shearing sampling wool and sharing stoies and good times with the ranchers and their families.

The Best We Can Figure Out

While most companies decide a price point, and reverse engineer a garment to meet that retail price, WeatherWool does the opposite. We make the best garment we can figure out how to make at every decision we face.Although our garments seem pricey to some our profit margins are below average and you're getting more value for your money and assurance that you're getting some of the best wool in the world.

Fantastic

I have the FullWeight updated Selvedge Poncho in drab green. The Poncho is exceptional in every way. Beautifully tailored and thoughtfully designed. The eleven slot buttons on either side allow you to configure the Poncho to your particular use. It is designed to lie completely flat for use as a blanket (excepting, of course, the hood in the middle). The interior hand warmer pocket is a great addition.
The wool is amazing. In FullWeight it is quite a heavy and substantial garment, and a smaller person might prefer the MidWeight version when offered by WeatherWool. The Selvedge Poncho is fantastic and I look forward to owning other WeatherWool garments.
