Labels

25 February 2026 --- Ralph

Legally, our garments must bear certain labels.  This page is long overdue.  Debby handles all the labels (the kind of thing that would drive me crazy), and so this page has not been on my mind.

But if we don't have ALL the labels we need, production is stalled.  So labels are completely critical!!  And getting labels made in the USA is not always simple or quick.  Production has been delayed for lack of labels.  We therefore tend to keep a great many labels on hand.

Our garments bear the following labels:

  • Manufacturer:  Legally, we need to identify ourselves
  • Composition:  What is the garment made of?  Another legal requirement
  • Origin:  Where is the garment made?  Where are the components made?  Also legally required
  • Care:  How to care for the garment?  I think this may also be a legal requirement
  • Size:  We have 9 garment sizes, from XXSmall through 4XLarge.  And we need to make size labels for our Blankets, too.
  • Batch Number:  Since 2018, we have attached Batch Tags that identify the Fabric Batch from which the garment was made.  This website details the exact sources of wool, and their proportions, of each Batch.  Usually, the Batch Number is under the size tag
  • American Flag/Made in USA

WeatherWool uses garment labels from NATco Global

The labels above and below show our name, our Hardcore Luxury trademark, "100% USA", and a sort of slogan, "100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool".  The label above is cloth, made by NATco.  The labels below are laser-engraved leather, made by Olie's Images (Copper Cactus).  We are delighted to note that Olie Moss is kin!

In 2024, WeatherWool began using, on some garments, leather labels, engraved by laser, made by Olies Images (DBA Copper Cactus)

We also use labels made by Sil Thread of New York City

Most recently, we have added a Ranch label.  We are delighted that, for some garments, 100% of the fiber comes from a single Ranch.  The first such case is the Innes Ranch:

Innes Ranch has been our single largest source of wool beginning in 2022. Innes Ranch is also the first Ranch from which we will source an entire Batch of Fabric. By the end of 2025, we hope to be shipping the first garments made from Batch Innes-1 Fabric … ALL the fiber in Batch Innes-1 was produced on the Innes Ranch, Gillette, Wyoming, in 2023 and 2024.

In addition to the labels themselves, and what they say, we are very careful about the placement of the labels.   Labels can have a functional impact, and because we can't make them from wool, their impact is always a negative.  So we try to minimize the potential negative impacts of labels by placing them as innocuously as possible.   But even this can get a bit complicated in the case of our garments that are frequently worn directly against the skin ... placing labels down low on the sides of the garment may be a little annoying.   I might actually place some labels on the outside of the garment.  Such external placement would be highly unconventional and some, for sure, would think very unsightly ... but I do focus on function.  And actually, I will admit that I somewhat enjoy bucking convention (setting the new convention??!!).   Perhaps label placement will be an addition to the list of "DOs that we DON'T" and "DON'Ts that we DO".
