King Ranch

27 September 2025 --- Mrs King

NOTE from Ralph ... We first purchased greasy wool from the King Family in 2024, but their wool is not new to us!  Mike Corn retired from Sheep Ranching after we purchased his fiber in 2023, and the King Family, with four young sons, purchased Mike's stock.  The following information and photos were sent to us in September of 2025 by Mrs King.

The journey started for our family one winter when we discovered the wonderful warmth of wool. We also were learning that this area in New Mexico, where our ranch is located, was historically sheep country.  This made our son interested in owning sheep.  In 2014, at age 7, he purchased 5 ewes and 1 buck from Mike Corn of Roswell, NM.  That spring we had a problem, those 5 ewes had 11 lambs; he’d just doubled his money. His 2 older brothers wanted in on the business!  Stay small or go big?  We decided to expand, buying more ewes and guard dogs, becoming a small part of the sheep and wool industry.

In 2022 our oldest sons went to Texas A&M shearing school and joined the West Texas / New Mexico shearing run furthering their passion for the heritage of New Mexico sheep and the wool business.

Over the years we have bought out several of the remaining sheep ranches putting together a herd of fine wools that have been raised in New Mexico for generations, becoming their own unique breed.  These sheep are known for their long fine wool and the ability to survive on the short grass prairie of New Mexico, with little input.  We rotationally graze the sheep with our cattle and they have been a great complement requiring less water and utilizing forages less accessible to the cows.  Our family is looking forward to the opportunities ahead, and excited to see our wool being used to make the very thing that brought us on this journey.
