Born and raised in North Carolina, Dane migrated to New York City in 1988 to attend School of Visual Arts, with advanced photography studies in Paris, France.
Dane has made a name for himself as a sought-after Cinematographer shooting both feature and documentary films as well as for myriad television clients.
Currently operating out of California, Lawing has proven himself as versatile as he is skilled, lensing Alison Eastwood’s sophomore feature film, “Battlecreek,” CNN's Doc-series "Pope: The Most Powerful Man in History", “House of the Witch" for SyFy; directing A&E's “Crazy Hearts: Nashville,” and shooting many episodes of the award-winning shows, “Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern” (Travel Channel), “What Not To Wear” (TLC), "Explorer", "Star Talk" and "When Sharks Attack” (all for National Geographic), among a long, varied list of television programs.
Dane relishes difficult environments and conditions and his documentary work reflects this, spanning the globe from the war-torn deserts of Iraq to the turbulent streets of Israel, trekking through the steaming jungles and minefields of Southeast Asia, navigating the Amazon and ultimately to the projects of Northern New Jersey - with films including the Academy Award considered “Quest for Honor,” Morgan Spurlock’s “Comic Con IV: A Fan’s Hope,” “The Street Stops Here” (PBS) and “TEA Party America” (BBC). His artistic vision, technological savvy, and team-oriented leadership skills have proven valuable assets to his work.
Lawing is a member of IATSE Local 600 and an active member of the SOC, a PADI Divemaster and FAA Licensed Small Unmanned Aircraft (Drone) Pilot.
