Description

We are not making the Mouton Jacket right now ... looking for tailors who can do the work the way we like.   But, there is one in the Lending Library, so, we this page is available for reference.

The Mouton Jackets are $2450 up to size 2X. Size 3X is $2550, but pricing depends on potential customization. Sizes larger than 3X require special discussion. We will be making these again when we have more FullWeight Fabric. Expect to make some in late 2023. Website pricing is 0 so you can indicate interest (backorder) without obligation.

The Mouton Jackets, Vests and Hoods are bespoke pieces ... made to order. And in the case of the Jackets and Vests, potentially made to semi-custom size. Options include:

  • Trimming -- or not -- of the Mouton Fleece at the edges of the Jacket
  • Placement and numbers of pockets - Cargo or Slash Pockets with Zipper

The exterior of these Jackets offers our FullWeight Merino Jacquard Fabric, and the interior of the entire torso and neck is lined with ultra-plush Natural Mouton pelts. (Mouton is essentially the highest grade of Shearling.) The center of one pelt is used for the back panel (or just the center of the back panel for large sizes), and the centers of two more pelts for the side panels. Larger sizes will require more pelts. Sleeves are doubled FullWeight Fabric. Wind is completely blocked by the leather of the Mouton Pelts.

The Mouton Jacket is seriously warm and incredibly luxurious. You won't be cold in this Jacket. Wind is nullified. The Mouton Jacket is designed for low levels of activity in temperatures ranging from cool to murderously cold. The Mouton Jacket is fine for tooling around urban settings and also works great for riding, snowmobiling, ball games and frigid sits in the field.

The front zipper, as usual, is a serious double zipper from YKK. The front zipper goes all the way up the stove pipe collar, so you can hide your lower face inside the Jacket if you need to. At the top of the zipper channel is a small woolen tab that will keep a frigid zipper from contacting your skin. And the zipper itself is protected by a button-down storm flap ... for several reasons:

  • The storm flap seals out wind and helps keep the zipper warm ... this is important because zippers that are rated below -20F/-29C don't seem to exist!
  • The storm flap prevents wind-driven rain or sleet from freezing the zipper
  • Should the zipper somehow fail, the storm flap will still enable complete closure of the Jacket
  • Storm flap is much more in keeping with the elegance of the Jacket than is an exposed zipper

There are some choices regarding pockets:

  • One vertical-entry Slash Pocket on the left side of the chest is standard and a second chest pocket can be added. The chest pockets are large enough for any cell phone and secured by a hidden zipper. Chest pockets are "pouch pockets", constructed of a pouch between the leather of the Mouton and the outer Fabric.
  • Side pockets can be angled-entry slash handwarmer pockets or large cargo pockets.

We can also make a Mouton Hood to pair with the Jacket. The Mouton Hood will also be made to order, and, buttons onto the back of the collar, and therefore can be removed whenever you'd like.

Another choice is the extent to which the Mouton Fur shows outside the Jacket. For example, in the photo below, the Fur extends slightly beyond the Fabric ... the Fur can be seen as a sort of trim below the bottom sweep and slightly past the edge of the Fabric of the collar:

Some customers have requested the Mouton be trimmed a little so it does not peek out from the inside of the Jacket.

The extra layer of wool shown on the forearms in the picture above is a non-standard addition.

Mouton Jackets are bespoke pieces. Feel free to order this Jacket online, or phone us because we'll need to talk with you a little anyway. We'll also need very careful measurements to make sure we get the size right, and a great way to make sure of sizing is for you to send one of your own jackets that is sized the way you want.  Please allow a month or two to complete the Jacket. If you are interested in the Mouton Hood, it is suggested to order it at the same time to ensure an exact color match.

As of this writing, we have Drab, Duff and Lynx Pattern Fabrics, but no Black.

Wow! It really doesn't matter how cold and windy conditions are. Wind cannot penetrate the torso and collar because of the leather of the Mouton Pelt, which can't be seen but surely makes its presence felt. The Mouton is 5/8 inch (1.6 cm) of high-loft lamb's wool, which traps a tremendous amount of air, creating enormous insulation. And our FullWeight Fabric on the outside adds even more insulation and warmth.

Our Mouton pieces have been tested under extreme conditions. The US Army and Navy built Ice Camp Sargo on the pack ice of the Arctic Ocean, 200 miles North of Alaska. They reported to us that temps of -20F/-29C and worse, with wind chill of -50F/-46C are no problem for the Mouton garments.

The picture below shows a closeup of the zipper and storm flap. Please note that we are now using Slot Buttons instead of snaps.

One of the defining characteristics of WeatherWool Fabric is breathability, which is vital for a garment designed for active wear. The Mouton pieces, including this Jacket, are NOT designed for active wear. Because the leather of the Mouton pelt is windproof, this Jacket does not breathe to any significant degree. Therefore, even in extremely low temperatures, you need to be very careful not to overheat if you are working, which will immediately cause moisture to build up inside the Jacket. Riding, sitting and strolling are fine.

Again, please understand these Jackets are Made to Order, so we'll need to work together some to get it done exactly right.

--- Thanks --- Ralph

Our Fabric

Our 100% American, 100% Wool Fabrics, made from 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool, are the foundation of our company. Making our own Fabric is time-consuming, difficult and expensive. But for us, there is no other way.

FAQ

Where is it made?

All of our products are 100% made in the USA using 100% American-made wool and materials. We pay American citizens to make all of our garments. See more.

Is WeatherWool in retail stores?

No, it is only available directly through this Website.

What are your garments designed for?

We set out to make the best All-Purpose outerwear possible and we take that "ALL" part seriously. While some items may be better then others for specific needs we like to think we have the perfect garment for anything you do outside regardless if it is in the serving in military, hunting, camping, city, country, work or worship.

Why is it so expensive?

We never cut a single corner at any step. We make our own fabric, from the best wool in the USA. There are over 45 steps in making our fabric alone. We use the highest quality materials made in the USA. We have owner operated customer service on call to serve you and offer free shipping in USA and Canada as well as hassle free returns.

Is WeatherWool Merino Wool?

Not exactly. Merino is great wool and has been very well marketed over the years but pure merino alone is not actually suitable for us.

We select our wool based on a number of characteristics including micron, strength, length, and comfort factor. With the help of our advisor Bob Padula we have determined the perfect recipe for our goals. Thanks to modern equipment we can test all the wool before we buy it and that wool is primarily coming from Rambouillet and Targhee breeds.

How do you clean WeatherWool

Short answer, you almost never need to. It's self cleaning. We've had garments we've worn for 7 years that have never been cleaned other then some rain.

However, things happen. If a lukewarm bath and dry flat doesn't do the trick, you can try wool-cleaner. Our full cleaning page is here.

Can bugs bite through your fabric?

We have not heard of any that can.

What is your customer service policy?

Our customers will be taken care of.

Full Customer Service policy can be found here.

About us

Founders / Owners

WeatherWool was founded in 2009 by Ralph and Debby DiMeo. Together with their children and a few friends they maintain 100% ownership of the company. Their full story can be read here.

Direct Connection To The Source

We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards. This isn't no stock photo. We're actually out there during shearing sampling wool and sharing stoies and good times with the ranchers and their families.

The Best We Can Figure Out

While most companies decide a price point, and reverse engineer a garment to meet that retail price, WeatherWool does the opposite. We make the best garment we can figure out how to make at every decision we face.Although our garments seem pricey to some our profit margins are below average and you're getting more value for your money and assurance that you're getting some of the best wool in the world.
