Description

This page just for future reference.   We are looking for the right tailors!

You are welcome to backorder a Mouton Vest, but we aren't accepting "live/paid" orders because we are low on Fabric and because we have begun working with a new tailor.

Please click for more information on Backorders, items In Stock Now and Production Status

The Mouton Vest is $1925 up to size 2X. Size 3X is $2000. Sizes above 3X will incur additional cost as these tend to require custom fitting. Price may also vary somewhat depending upon any customization requests.

The Mouton Vest is a coat without sleeves ... warm, windproof. Super-warm around the body core and totally eliminates the bulked-up feeling that can be created by the sleeves of a heavy jacket.

Construction is similar to that of our Mouton Jacket. The outside of the Vest is our own FullWeight Merino Jacquard Fabric. The inside of the Vest is lined with the namesake Mouton, an extremely select grade of natural lamb pelt. Less than 1% of American lambs have a fleece that is soft and silky enough to grade out to Mouton. The pelt is tanned and dyed brown (other colors are possible), and trimmed to a uniform 5/8 inch (1.6 cm). The fleece is still attached to the tanned hide, and so in effect there is a third layer -- leather -- in between the Lamb's Fleece and our Fabric.

  • Inside panels of the Vest are large, solid pieces taken from the centers of the Mouton Pelts.  Multiple pelts required to make each Vest
  • Our own FullWeight Merino Jacquard Fabric outer layer
  • Back panel is longer for better coverage when bending (and a great look!)
  • Two-way, Heavy-Duty YKK Vislon Center-Front Zipper
  • Storm Flap secured by Slot Buttons that covers the Center-Front Zipper
  • Stove-pipe collar
  • Handwarmer Pockets that are separate from, and behind, the Cargo Pockets. But the Vest can be made with or without Cargo or Handwarmer Pockets, and there are various ways to do the pockets. Pockets are part of customization
  • This Vest is actually reversible, and some people wear it that way sometimes, but the center-front zipper isn't made for that, and the pockets will then be on the inside
  • Buttons on the back of the collar can attach the optional Mouton Hood or Double Hood.
  • Some features -- pockets, color and visibility of Mouton Fur -- can be customized, and costs will vary

The Mouton Vest is not only seriously warm, but also, because of the leather of the Mouton Pelt, windproof, and just the ticket for low levels of physical activity in cool to severely cold weather. And you can wear the vest in fairly warm temperatures if you do not exert yourself. But if you are really active and start generating any significant heat of your own, the Mouton Vest will likely be too warm, even in temperatures far below freezing. However, you can vent a great deal of heat by opening the front of the Vest. The potential venting of heat is one of the big advantages of a Vest over a coat. It doesn't matter how windy it is, wind will not penetrate the leather. But if you really need to vent some heat, open the Vest and turn into the wind.

The Vest has what is called a stovepipe collar. The collar zips way up high so you can protect your chin and nestle into the jacket up to your nose.

The Collar of the Vest has buttons on the Fabric Side in order to accept either our Double-Hood or our Mouton Hood (also made-to-order, and it's best to order the Hood at the same time as the Vest).

There is a chest pocket, and a second chest pocket can be added. Side pockets can be slash pockets or cargo pockets ... and handwarmer pockets can be added behind the cargo pockets. A wide variety of pockets can be made, but deviating from the standards will be expensive and time-consuming.

Another choice is the extent to which the Mouton Fur shows outside the Vest. Without trimming, the Fur extends slightly beyond the Fabric, so the Fur can be seen above the collar and below the bottom sweep, as shown in the photos.

These Vests are made to Order. Please allow up to two months for delivery. The best way to ensure the proper fit is for us to size the Mouton Vest based on a piece of your own that fits the way you want.

Below are three "detail photos" of the Mouton Vest. The Mouton Fur is not trimmed in these photos, and therefore extends a little bit beyond the Fabric.

Both Chase and Fazon Gray (@FazonGray), the other gentleman in the main photos at left, are professional models, and both really favor this Vest for wear in their personal lives. Fazon even wears the Mouton Vest to actual fashion shoots! MANY THANKS to @Essence Magazine for a great photo.

Exact pricing will depend upon options, but the basic prices are $1525 up to size 2X. Size 3X is $1600. Larger sizes will need discussion, and may not be possible.

Our Fabric

Our 100% American, 100% Wool Fabrics, made from 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool, are the foundation of our company. Making our own Fabric is time-consuming, difficult and expensive. But for us, there is no other way.

FAQ

Where is it made?

All of our products are 100% made in the USA using 100% American-made wool and materials. We pay American citizens to make all of our garments. See more.

Is WeatherWool in retail stores?

No, it is only available directly through this Website.

What are your garments designed for?

We set out to make the best All-Purpose outerwear possible and we take that "ALL" part seriously. While some items may be better then others for specific needs we like to think we have the perfect garment for anything you do outside regardless if it is in the serving in military, hunting, camping, city, country, work or worship.

Why is it so expensive?

We never cut a single corner at any step. We make our own fabric, from the best wool in the USA. There are over 45 steps in making our fabric alone. We use the highest quality materials made in the USA. We have owner operated customer service on call to serve you and offer free shipping in USA and Canada as well as hassle free returns.

Is WeatherWool Merino Wool?

Not exactly. Merino is great wool and has been very well marketed over the years but pure merino alone is not actually suitable for us.

We select our wool based on a number of characteristics including micron, strength, length, and comfort factor. With the help of our advisor Bob Padula we have determined the perfect recipe for our goals. Thanks to modern equipment we can test all the wool before we buy it and that wool is primarily coming from Rambouillet and Targhee breeds.

How do you clean WeatherWool

Short answer, you almost never need to. It's self cleaning. We've had garments we've worn for 7 years that have never been cleaned other then some rain.

However, things happen. If a lukewarm bath and dry flat doesn't do the trick, you can try wool-cleaner. Our full cleaning page is here.

Can bugs bite through your fabric?

We have not heard of any that can.

What is your customer service policy?

Our customers will be taken care of.

Full Customer Service policy can be found here.

About us

Founders / Owners

WeatherWool was founded in 2009 by Ralph and Debby DiMeo. Together with their children and a few friends they maintain 100% ownership of the company. Their full story can be read here.

Direct Connection To The Source

We make our own Fabric, starting with raw wool carefully and specifically selected from a small group of ranches in the USA that meet our certification standards. This isn't no stock photo. We're actually out there during shearing sampling wool and sharing stoies and good times with the ranchers and their families.

The Best We Can Figure Out

While most companies decide a price point, and reverse engineer a garment to meet that retail price, WeatherWool does the opposite. We make the best garment we can figure out how to make at every decision we face.Although our garments seem pricey to some our profit margins are below average and you're getting more value for your money and assurance that you're getting some of the best wool in the world.
