WeatherWool Heritage Fabric

Heritage is our newest Fabric, not offered until 2024.  Heritage is:  Heritage may be purchase on the WeatherWool Fabric

  • 100% USA and 100% Wool, of course ... 100% WeatherWool Certified Fine Wool
  • 100% Worsted, made from the same yarn as the warp of our FullWeight and MidWeight Fabrics
  • Woven in the simplest one-over-one, plain weave on a Dobby loom
  • About 6.65 ounces per square yard (226 grams per square meter)

We have been hesitant to offer Heritage Fabric to the public, whether as pure Fabric or made into a garment (such as a Shirt), because we did not design it to be a product on its own AND because Shirts, the only item we've made from the Heritage, are not what I think of as "outerwear".  However, Shirts certainly are or can be outerwear.  Also, other people may have other uses for this Fabric.

We originally designed Heritage for use as a construction Fabric in our other garments.  Our Jacquard and Denim Fabrics are not suitable, for example, to make pockets ... too heavy and too bulky for that purpose.   BUT ... we want to avoid the use of anything other than wool ... or even any woolen fabric not our own.

At first, instead of Heritage, we were calling this Fabric "Utility", because we intended to use it for pockets, pockets, channels.  But Alex liked it a lot right away, and pushed us to make a couple of shirts ... so ... we did.

Once we'd been wearing these Shirts a little, we realized we'd be using this Fabric for more than just pockets ... So ... We named it Heritage because of the classic construction ... pure wool, 100% worsted yarn, and the simplest, one-over-one weave.  Also sometime called a plain weave or a simple weave.

Here is a diagram of a plain weave.  One warp over one weft.  One weft over one warp.

THANKS to Wikimedia Commons (User Jancourt) for this drawing!!!

For logistical rather than technical reasons, it's taken us a while to gain the size and the resources needed to make Heritage from our own fiber.  But now that we have it, we are interested in seeing what it can do!

We have personally tested the Shirts we made (not yet offered for sale), and we have had lab tests done as well.  But time will tell how it performs in the field, whether as pockets or channels or backing ... Shirts have tested great!!!
