All-Around Jacket

Description

All-Around Jackets are $885 up to size 2X. Size 3X is $915 and 4X is $945.
We're almost completely sold out now, but we'll make more AAJs in all our FullWeight Fabrics in 2024.

In stock now:
  • XXSmall:  Brown
  • 3XLarge:  Drab

Any AAJ that are not now in stock can be backordered without obligation (price set to 0) from this page. Live pricing in effect for whatever is in stock. We recommend setting up any backorder as SHIP ASAP, which will reserve the jacket for you. The "SHIP ASAPs" are shipped first. Other orders are not reserved, and we don't have the Fabric to make many extras.

Before ordering, please visit the sizing page and please follow instructions. Or phone us. Thanks!!

The All-Around Jacket can be worn in almost any outdoor or social setting. Many people go straight from the field to professional meetings.  The AAJ can withstand unlimited snow, huge amounts of sleet and rain, significant wind ... and even a dunking in winter.   It is designed for cool and cold weather, and can be worn in temps as high as 70F/22C (over a light wool base layer or even no base layer at all) or as cold as you like, far below freezing, with the right base layer(s). Lots of pockets.

  • Constructed of WeatherWool Rambouillet Merino Jacquard FullWeight Fabric, the AAJ will provide a 50 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) range of comfort without any change of clothing.   Dress for 35F/2C and you are good in 10F/-12C or 60F/16C ... that's basic WeatherWool. But keep in mind our Fabrics, by design, are not windproof. We view breathability as vital. One layer of our FullWeight Fabric will stop a wind of about 15mph (24kph). But you will also have base layers and the AAJ has more than one layer on top and in front
  • Craftsmen-sewn, ultra-durable construction and materials
  • Double Yoke (second layer of FullWeight Fabric across the top of the chest, shoulders, and top of the back) sheds huge amounts of rain and provides protection from cold and wind where we need it most. The second layer of wool hangs free from the rest of the AAJ, and it is this separation of layers that enables the jacket to handle so much rain without soaking through
  • Extra-long sleeves, reducing the need for gloves
  • Four zippered pockets inside the body of the jacket
  • Adjustable wrist cuffs
  • Waist cinches to create a more tapered shape if desired, or reduce air flow
  • Two-way, heavy-duty YKK Vislon front zipper
  • Storm Flap protecting the front zipper is secured by Slot Buttons. Should the zipper somehow fail, the storm flap enables full front closure. Of course, the storm flap also enhances warmth and keeps snow and ice off the zipper. By hiding the zipper, the storm flap creates a more classic, old-fashioned aesthetic than an exposed double-zip. The Storm Flap also helps keep the zipper warm, which reduced the chances of the zipper failing due to cold. (YKK rates their zippers to -20F/-29C.)
  • Front cargo pockets are closed with both zippers and flaps. The flaps are angled to shed rainwater and are secured with three slot buttons (pictured AAJs have two buttons, earlier version)
  • Large, side-entry handwarmer pockets are separate from and underneath the cargo pockets
  • Elbows and forearms protected with double thickness of our FullWeight Fabric
  • Serious collar can be flipped up and secured by a throat latch. When not in use, the latch is buttoned into the left cargo pocket or left buttoned to the collar. The latch can be buttoned to the back of the collar, where it can be used as a loop to hang the AAJ from a peg. In the "rear position" the throat latch will also make the collar stand up a little more
  • Mil-Spec Anefil Nylon water-resistant thread (used by the US Army)
  • Slot Buttons used exclusively
  • Three Slot Buttons on the back of the collar to attach the Double Hood (sold separately). If you do want the Double Hood, we recommend ordering at the same time as the AAJ to ensure same dye lot. The Double Hoods are presently sold out but we are making more of them at the same time as the AAJs
  • In size Large, the AAJ weighs 5 pounds (2.27 kg)

Available in FullWeight Merino Jacquard Fabric in Solid Colors Black, Brown, Drab and Lynx Pattern. All of the colors are shown in the accompanying photos.

Most of the photos here show the previous version of the AAJ, which had the front of the jacket centered on the zipper. The front of the Jacket is now centered on the Storm Flap, which protects the zipper. This is really a cosmetic, rather than functional change. Some people felt the jacket looked off-balance previously.

We got an interesting note from someone telling us he was doing film and video with his phone in some nasty weather, and every so often he'd place his wet phone in a handwarmer pocket. After 5 minutes or so, his phone was dry and this worked for the entire 2.5 hours he was in the storm.

The All-Around Jacket has appeared regularly on History Channel's hit series MOUNTAIN MEN, being worn by Josh Kirk and Kidd Youren, among others. It's common practice for manufacturers to pay serious money for "product placement." Josh got in touch with us simply because he noticed other outdoor professionals in WeatherWool, and he wears the AAJ because he wants to.  Same with Kidd. Harry kids brother borrowed Kidd's and wants his own. By the way, Denali, Debby and I visited Josh at his home in Wyoming, which is pretty amazing. He is a great guy, very much fun and interesting to spend time with. The AAJ is also worn by Alex Javor on the National Geographic TV Series Life Below Zero Next Generation. We have never paid anyone to wear WeatherWool.

Thanks to our friend Carl Murawski for the cigar photo. I just really like that one!
