WeatherWool Merino

Sorry, we are completely Sold Out, and we won't be making more woven Hats of any kind until 2023. We are working to make more knitted Watch Caps for October 2022.

Boonies can be backordered without obligation (price set to 0) from this page. We hope to offer them again for 2022 at $155. Latest information about our production is here. Our entire inventory is here.

Sometimes called the Bucket Hat or the Jungle Hat, it is intended for all-around use, and for stuffing in a pack or even a big pocket. It is one of the most popular designs in the military. The Boonie can shed a great deal of weather. Cold rain or snow is no problem. The Boonie will protect your head in windy temperatures well below freezing, but is still comfortable in relative warmth.
  • 2.25 inch (5.7 cm) brim
  • FullWeight or MidWeight WeatherWool Jacquard Merino fabric. We've not made MidWeight Boonies yet, but I think they will be great
  • Soft and easy to pack
  • Sewn with hydrophobic thread; especially important on stitching of brim
  • Adjustable paracord chin strap
  • 2XLarge Boonie weighs 6.6 oz

The Boonie is made completely of our Fabric, and next production run I want to make the Boonie in both Full and MidWeight Fabrics. MidWeight will be new, and therefore something of a test. But I'm confident MidWeight Boonies will work extremely well.

It’s a full-size hat, and like the Walker Hat, most people will be able to wear it fairly high on the head or pulled down to protect the tops of the ears. I've worn the Boonie in chilly, windy weather, down around 20F/-7C and was a little surprised with how well it performed. I knew it would keep my head warm, but did not expect it to keep my ears totally comfortable. But the brim of the hat resting on my ears and sort of tucking them against my head made the Boonie comfortable in some fairly cool weather.

The Boonie has a soft and flexible but serious brim, 2.25 inches ... almost 2.5 inches (6 cm) ... enough of a brim to keep rain and snow off your face and ears and guide dripping water outside your collar and onto your jacket, not down your neck or back. The brim is also big enough to keep the weather well off your face and eyeglasses. The Boonie will shed a ridiculous amount of rain, and snow is a complete non-factor.

This hat will really perform in the field, but will not be out of place in dressier situations. And that may be more significant than I had previously thought, because we have been seeing Ladies wear our Boonie Hat in a decidedly different manner than men. The Ladies have sometimes been wearing the Boonie pulled down lower, over the ears and down low on the head, with the forehead inside the Hat. It makes the Boonie into almost an entirely different Hat ... a Fashion Hat! ... but it sure looks great that way, and it certainly provides the head with serious protection against the weather.

The picture below shows a Boonie Hat in Lynx Pattern that has been stiffened a little, and a Boonie Hat in DRAB that had been stuffed into a pocket. Traditionally, people wear the Boonie as a ‘floppy’ Hat, like the DRAB one pictured here. But it can also be starched or sized (placed over a form) for a little bit more of a formal look.

The WeatherWool Boonie Hat resists a great deal of weather

The Boonie has an adjustable chin strap that can be comfortably worn tucked up inside the hat when not in use. Even on a blustery day I did not need to use the chin strap, but some people use the strap a lot. The strap is important for boating. Also, some people will use the strap so they can push the Hat off the head and just have it hang on their back. Guys used to wear the hats this way often in old Western movies. I wear the Boonie a lot, and almost always leave the strap inside the Hat, sitting on top of my head. Guys in the Military often have the strap hang off the back brim.

The WeatherWool Boonie is available in Black, Drab, Duff and Lynx Pattern.

Also please see the WeatherWool Big Brim Boonie Hat, which is very similar but has a wider brim.
